Selection Criteria & Tips For Teams

The judging panel on the night will be composed of MYMI Project Leads, Branch Execs & advisors. See below for their selection criteria, and important considerations you should try to address in your 3-5 minute pitch.

1. CLINICAL NEED

  • Does the project address a genuine, validated healthcare challenge?

  • Is the problem significant in terms of patient impact, cost, or access to care?

  • How clearly is the need articulated and evidenced?

2. FEASIBILITY

  • Can the project realistically be executed within available/reasonably proposed student timeframes and resources?

  • Are the proposed methods and technologies practical at this stage?

  • Does the team show awareness of potential technical or logistical hurdles?

3. VIABILITY

  • Does the idea have potential for long-term impact, commercialisation, or adoption?

  • Is there a pathway to translation (e.g., partnership, prototype, FYP integration), and how sustainable is this proposed model or plan?

  • Does the pitch clearly outline planned milestones, goals and timelines?

4. INNOVATION& ORIGINALITY

  • Is the idea novel or meaningfully different from existing solutions/projects?

  • Does it demonstrate creative thinking?

5. TEAM CAPABILITY & COMMITEMENT

  • Does the team have (or plan to recruit) the skills needed?

  • Do they show motivation and ability to follow through?

What exactly is the Kickoff Meeting?

At the Kickoff Meeting, you will have a chance to discuss your idea with MYMI, ask questions and receive feedback. We will ask about your idea, you and your team (if applicable).

This meeting will not be strictly used to assess your project idea, however it acts to inform us how your project may fit within MYMI’s portfolio. Specifically, we want to see:

  • Articulation of the clinical problem your project will target

  • Early evidence that your idea is grounded & feasible

  • A realistic path forward (even if early-stage)

  • Enthusiasm and commitment to developing the idea!

Kickoff Meetings will run between Week 8 & Week 9:

please fill out the EOI Form to indicate your preferred times.

Other FAQs

Do I have to pitch in a team? What is an ideal team size?

No, it isn’t necessary to pitch in a team. However, it is a good idea to know what skill sets you may need to bring into the team for later stages of your proposed project. Additionally, there are no set caps on team size, however, ensure that you can justify how your team’s capabilities make it a strong candidate. In hackathons & pitching competitions, teams of 2-5 are common.

Do I have to be an engineering student/What degrees are allowed to participate?

Students of any degree are encouraged to participate. We find that multidisciplinary teams (including engineering, biomedicine, medicine, law, business, IT, science and/or design students) perform extremely well as they are able to tackle the many aspects of high-impact, multi-faceted challenges.

Where will Innovation Night be held?

Both Innovation Night and Kickoff Meetings will be held on-campus at Monash University Clayton. Exact locations will be confirmed closer to the dates.

Do I need to be a Monash student?

Yes, we do require that teams are composed of students currently studying at Monash University. Undergraduate, honours and post-graduate students are all welcome to pitch.

Do I need a prototype?

No, early-stage concepts are welcome. Innovation Night is about potential, not perfection. Winning teams will receive MYMI support to research, design, and build any necessary prototypes or mockups throughout their project.
